Spain’s Labor and Social Security Inspectorate

Spotting False Self-Employment

Some freelance jobs can hide what is actually an employment relationship, leaving workers with fewer rights and protections. Spain’s Labor and Social Security Inspectorate needed a campaign to help people identify and prevent false self-employment. From the outset, our vision for this project was to make the hidden visible and empower workers with clarity and understanding.

Approach:

The campaign started from the idea of giving people practical tools to identify false self-employment. With clear messages, it helped workers detect irregularities in contracts, understand their rights, and take action. By focusing on the details that often go unnoticed, the campaign enables workers to make informed decisions, report abusive practices, and protect themselves.

The creative concept was built around the difference between what something is and what it appears to be. To bring this idea to life, we used a familiar element for self-employed workers: paperwork. The fine print became the central visual device, highlighting hidden details that can reveal a disguised employment relationship.

Designed for digital environments, the campaign was adapted across social media and information channels from the Labour and Social Security Inspectorate. Motion graphics recreated the gesture of zooming in on a mobile screen, turning the act of reading closely into an interaction that reinforces the importance of looking beyond the surface.
